Liam Byrne at St Laurence’s Summer Arts Festival in Ludlow

Date/Time
Date(s) - 14th Jun 2017
13:00 - 14:00

The internationally renowned Viola da Gamba player Liam Byrne will play a recital of lyra viol music that spans 17th century British musical life, from the complex lute-like creations of Stuart court composers Ferrabosco and Lawes, to the folk-song settings of Playford, with which Samuel Pepys would have entertained himself of an evening. The lyra viol tradition is a way of playing the viola da gamba that flourished in Britain, involving many different ways of tuning the instrument in order to achieve beautiful and unusual colours and timbres. Liam plays a viola da gamba made in 2012 by master luthier and Ludlow resident Marc Soubeyran.
